Where Is Everyone?

So I have been posting a lot less recently... mainly because none of the bands I follow are doing anything! After the release of The Twang's 10:20 today, I have no albums on the horizon to anticipate until January, when Biffy Clyro will grace our speakers with a double album! Whilst this time of year is usually barren in terms of releases, there is usually some form of news; some promise that music is coming soon, but in the latter end of 2012... nothing. So, while I'm scouring the Internet for new bands to enjoy in the meantime, I decided to have a catch-up on what all the other bands are doing, and of course provide the information here. So, where is everyone?

The Courteeners - Their third album has apparently been recorded, and are currently in the process of sorting out a promotional campaign to go with it. A few songs have been debuted live, but hopefully more will appear at the end of the year as the band are playing a few gigs then.
TRACK TITLES: Welcome To The Rave, Lose Control, Push Yourself, Save Rosemary In Time, Why Are You Still With Him?, Something You Can't Have
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: February

Delphic - The band have started playing gigs and started debuting some new songs to follow their Olympics single Good Life. Their second album has been recorded, but no word on where the release stands.
TRACK TITLES: Good Life, Atlas, Memeo, Baiya, Changes
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: April

Editors - After a re-jigging of their line-up for album number four, the band are now at work on said album. A few tracks have been played live to whet our appetites, and some have even gone through noticeable changes as the line-up changed. Hopefully some more details will arise around December as the band are playing XFM Winter Wonderland then.
TRACK TITLES: Sugar, Nothing, Two Hearted Spider, The Sting, Magazine, Upright, What Is This Thing Called Love?, Honesty, The Weight Of Your Love, Formaldehyde
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: April

Embrace - The band's sixth album has been in the pipeline for several years now, and promise something will appear soon, but there isn't much to go on, apart from one track title!
TRACK TITLES: Self Attack Mechanism
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: June

Glasvegas - After NME mistakenly reported a title for the band's third album, it came out that the album was practically done, but remained untitled. A song called If? was also put online in demo form.
TRACK TITLES: If?, I'd Rather Be Dead Than Be With You, Later... When The TV Turns To Static, All I Want Is My Baby
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: March

Hadouken! - Well, this one is taking forever. After two singles in 2010, which may not feature on the album, the band followed this up by another one in April, one in August, had another song feature on FIFA 13, did a collaboration with Drumsound & Bassline Smith, and also debuted three further songs at their live shows in April! That's practically an album in itself! Just release it already - the songs are fantastic!
TRACK TITLES: Vessel, Parasite, Mecha Love, Oxygen, Comedown, Bliss Out, Daylight, Levitate, Bad Signal, As One
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: April

Klaxons - Not too much info available on this one, but there is a third album, and the band have debuted two songs live.
TRACK TITLES: Rhythm Of Life, Invisible Forces
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: May

One Night Only - The band are slowly building up tracks for their third album, and are reportedly about halfway through the process. One song has been released (Long Time Coming) and another (Games) should surface soon... hopefully!
TRACK TITLES: Long Time Coming, Games, Night On Earth
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: August

The Pigeon Detectives - Firing out a fourth album not that long after their third, the band should be back sometime not far into the new year. However, nothing is really known about it! Maybe some of their gigs in November will reveal some more...
TRACK TITLES: I Don't Mind
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: March

White Lies - Nothing is known about this one, other than a third album is in the works, after two phenomenal ones. Let's hope it lives up to its predecessors!
TRACK TITLES: ?
ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: September

Best Of 2011: #8

#8 - Glasvegas - Euphoric /// Heartbreak \\\

Original review here.

Slightly odd album title aside, Glasvegas's second album sees them venture into electronic territory, and producing some damn fine songs while they're at it! Retaining some of their dark, slightly depressing sound from their debut but letting in some happier lyrics here and there, lead singer James Allan really comes into his own this time round. Masterpieces such as the anthems Shine Like Stars and Euphoria, Take My Hand mixed in with the epic doom-and-gloom of Whatever Hurts You Through The Night (the greatest song on this album) really makes for a mixed bag, but that doesn't matter - every song is absolutely jaw-dropping.

Album Review: Glasvegas - Euphoric /// Heartbreak \\\

Album: Euphoric /// Heartbreak \\\
Artist: Glasvegas
Singles: The World Is Yours (free download), Euphoria, Take My Hand

I never really enjoyed Glasvegas' debut album; although I absolutely loved Geraldine and Daddy's Gone, not much of the rest got to me. So I wasn't too overexcited when I heard about their second album. Then I heard The World Is Yours. Then I heard Euphoria, Take My Hand. Suddenly I wanted to hear this album so badly. And.... well, let's go through it track by track.

Pain, Pain, Never Again
Unfortunately, a slightly overlong opener. I understand its placing and lyrics (well, with the added help of having the lyrics on hand - you'd be lost trying to get your head round James Allan's thick Scottish accent) but really all it does is serve as a build-up track to The World Is Yours. It features spoken words over a synth gradually building up and the same words being spoken in French. Thank god Allan's not the one speaking in French, we'd never understand it!

The World Is Yours
The free download, still as awesome as it was three months ago. It instantly demonstrates the band's new synth-orientated sound, but Allan's powerful and emotive (and ever so slightly out of tune) voice has not been forfeited for this. Just take one listen to "You don't need me as much as I need you" and you'll see what I mean. The new songs may be instantly recognisable as headed for stadiums, but the emotion from the first album, which I admit was lost on me until recently when I had a re-listen, has not gone anywhere. If anything, it's greater.

You
Barging its way abruptly through past the end of The World Is Yours, this is actually quite similar to the song before it. Its chorus may be simpler: "You! You! Yoooooou!" but on first listen, it doesn't sound particularly different. It's a good song, but doesn't have any instantly memorable features - it requires a good few listens for it to really hit home.

Shine Like Stars
One of my two absolute favourites. It opens after static shuts off You abruptly, and a stabbing synth announces its arrival. "I feel the black fade to grey, I feel forwards as the only way" goes the opening lyric, and you can fully feel the emotional power going into the vocals. This is then followed by the stunning (if again, incredibly simple) chorus of "Shine like stars! Shine like stars do!" Then the guitars crash in, taking this song to dizzy heights of brilliance. If this isn't a single, something's gone wrong somewhere.

Whatever Hurts You Through The Night
Another absolute favourite, which sees the band moving far out of their comfort zone. The song may sound ridiculously overblown, but its M83-style synth line gave me goosebumps - every single time it turned up. There is no chorus, but the synth line takes charge instead. The song is absolutely epic, and Allan's vocals are at their peak in terms of their sheer emotional power - it's also a very sad sounding song. But it's been a long time since I've stopped listening to an album for the first time just to listen to one song again. A definite candidate for song of the year... if I did that.

Stronger Than Dirt (Homosexuality pt. 2)
I will probably never understand the band's reasoning behind putting part 2 first, but oh well. Allan commendably has expanded his lyrical content here, to try and imagine what it would like to be gay, and actually he's nearly at his best on this song. Unfortunately, the music that it's set to is slightly less interesting. Maybe it's because it's coming off the back of two huge 'built-for-stadiums' songs, but it just doesn't hold up as well as the rest of the album. Still, it's an alright song and I won't be skipping it anytime soon.

Dream Dream Dreaming
The quality has gone straight back up for this song. Powerful drums and a familiar-sounding synth open it up well. But the highlight is the chorus - "There will be no holding back, I'll tell you a feeling..." which sounds stunning the first time, but wait until later on in the song, when it all goes quiet as Allan sings the refrain of "I know you're out somewhere" before launching back into the chorus, even more epic than before. Again, the emotion in his voice is at its peak on this song.

I Feel Wrong (Homosexuality pt 1)
A slower song with some nice powerful drumming courtesy of new drummer Jonna Löfgren, this one is more catchy despite its slower pace. Again, we're returning to Allan's imagination of what it's like to be gay, lyrically, and the fact that he's singing about someone who is uncomfortable with those feelings is heightened by the emotive power in his voice. Nothing much happens on this song, but it's still good.

Euphoria, Take My Hand
Whilst the lyrics turn to incredible simplicity ("Your ways, my ways, never, always, the future, the past, the first, the last" goes the first verse.) the song sounds like the obvious radio-friendly choice for the first single. And as the title would suggest, it is a nice big euphoric song. While comparisons have been made between the main guitar riff and Coldplay's Life In Technicolor ii (which I do hear), they're still very different beasts. But still, it sounds huge and will go down well in stadiums.

Lots Sometimes
Despite the repetition of the words "lots sometimes" that occurs throughout this big-sounding penultimate track (The words are sung roughly 50 times throughout the song; at the end of each line), it fades away and you'll find yourself singing those words. Again, choruses are abandoned and the band opts for more of a build-up sort of track. It's a stunning and magnificent final slice of euphoria before the closer...

Change
A sad, piano-driven song about a boy coming out of prison and being scared of actually getting out, this one seems like an anti-climax to the power of Euphoria, Take My Hand and Lots Sometimes, but it holds power in its simplicity - essentially nothing but a piano and Allan's powerful voice showing a more sensitive side as he quietly sings the lyrics, again at their height. And then the album closes with his mother's voice, consoling him. The album ends quite suddenly on the final words; "Before you change for me, change for you." So it may be a sudden change in direction before the end, but it's done well.

Overall, a definite improvement on their debut for me. The songs have added power, particularly in the drumming and singing departments and will work great in stadiums. Guitars may have been slightly confined to the background, but they still hold some weight. The only songs that I'm really not too keen on are the opener and Stronger Than Dirt. (I really don't like the former - maybe if it was a bit shorter, I would like it, but it's not; and Stronger Than Dirt just doesn't interest me as much as the other songs). But generally, this is going to be a highlight of the year for me. Now for some reason I have an urge to listen to Whatever Hurts You Through The Night again.

Single Review: Glasvegas - Euphoria, Take My Hand

Single: Euphoria, Take My Hand
Artist: Glasvegas
From the album EUPHORIC /// HEARTBREAK \\\

At last, Glasvegas make their full comeback. After releasing the fantastic "The World Is Yours" as a free download earlier this year, the pressure was on for the lead single proper to better it. In my opinion, however, The World Is Yours is a better song. But that does not mean that this is a bad song; far from it. It's a fairly standard Glasvegas song, with a guitar riff reminiscent of their 2008 single Geraldine, and wouldn't be out of place on their debut album. But it's a worthy first single, and leaves me excited for the upcoming album.

Glasvegas Set To Release Second Album

After the loss of their drummer, Glasvegas have announced a replacement, and also that their second album will be released (hopefully) in the first half of 2011. They have worked with Flood, which makes me excited as he produced my favourite album of 2009, Editors' In This Light And On This Evening.

Best Of 2008 (#20-#16)

Christmas tomorrow. Can you wait???

20. The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing

The raw indie sound of the Ting Tings sounds good when you listen to their singles, and the album certainly didn't disappoint in that aspect. But once again, it's an album that just didn't work, in my opinion. However, Great DJ, That's Not My Name and Shut Up And Let Me Go are all brilliant.
SCORE: 6/10

19. Simple Plan - Simple Plan

Despite the uncreativity of naming their third album, this seems like quite a good album. It's one of the less common genres that I listen to, but nevertheless, it seems to catch on. When I'm Gone storms in to start off, followed up by the fantastic Take My Hand. A bit of dawdling, and then the occasional good track; Generation, Holding On and finally What If.
SCORE: 6/10

18. Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul

I have to admit, I have not really listened to Oasis aside from their Stop The Clocks greatest hits album, and I feel a little guilty in doing so, as this album probably deserves a lot more than what I'm using to base my review on. But I have heard the brilliant Shock Of The Lightning and I'm Outta Time, and that, coupled with the fact that Oasis are one of the best bands around according to most, made me buy the album. But as I can't really review it, I think we should ignore scoring for this one.

17. Kaiser Chiefs - Off With Their Heads

Oh dear. Is what I first thought on hearing this album. But it has grown on me a little bit. Good bits are Never Miss A Beat, Good Days Bad Days, Always Happens Like That and Addicted To Drugs, but there are also songs such as the downright odd opener Spanish Metal, and the distinctly dodgy Half The Truth. I'm sure Sway, who raps on the latter, is a good rapper, just not on a Kaiser Chiefs song. At least not that one. Nevertheless, the album generally doesn't disappoint, it just doesn't live up to the previous two albums.
SCORE: 6/10

16. Glasvegas - Glasvegas

This album, like the previously reviewed ones, has its ups and downs. But the ups are beyond brilliant in my opinion. Geraldine was on repeat on my iPod for God knows how long and I didn't get bored. Daddy's Gone is also a fantastic song. The album, however, hasn't really hit me that much. I can't understand the eighth track, Stabbed, at least why the band chose to put it on there. However, the two previously mentioned tracks are enough to get this band to the 6/10 score.
SCORE: 6/10
